I had the most amazing time at the Austin Conference! What an enthusiastic and passionate group of teachers! I loved their energy, excitement and questions. Per there requests I will be posting some of my favorite math games and activities! Most of these ideas are not my own, but I may have tweaked them from their original form. One thing I love about teaching, is that we all put our own spin on things! Use what you want! My only request is that if you find something golden, or tweak it to make it better, that you share that back with the rest of us!

I've spent this year working with the MSU Internship Academy where I have learned a LOT! Teaching can be challenging...okay teaching IS challenging! It's difficult to balance the different aspects: planning, grading, analyzing, building relationships, managing the classroom..the list goes on. It is difficult, but it is do-able! For me it is truly about relationships and engagement!

I love data! I love looking at the pre-assessment compared to the post-assessment! I love thinking about, "How can I teach this standard in a memorable and meaningful way?" I am excited to share some of my favorite activities and techniques with anyone who is willing to listen because I believe that learning should be fun! If I can make my students WANT to be at school, then the learning WILL happen! Attitude is everything! When they are invested, they are growing!

Please check out the Teacher Resource page as I am trying to update it as often as possible with free resources! If you grab something, I would love a quick comment letting me know what you think! I would also love to hear how you used it, modified it, and made it your own! That is truly how we grow!

Here is a link to some free Scientific Method posters. I love introducing the Scientific Method to my new class at the beginning of the year. It ties in so easily, and well, with all the back to school STEM/Team Building activities.

Usually when I introduce this, I will display the steps of the Scientific Method for my students. Then we will begin working through each step discussing a gesture we think matches each step. I love Whole Brain Teaching, and I believe in incorporating all modalities of learning in each lesson as I best can. Creating a review chant or song with gestures and providing a chart to match checks all my boxes! I then use the different chants/songs as line up call backs. Students in my room are constantly reviewing different material throughout the year, but in a fun way. This gives them something to be saying as they are moving through the room, instead of just free talking.

Some great back to school activities to use these posters with include:

Rosie Revere Engineer: - Create hoop gliders or paper airplanes! Discuss modifications as students work to change and make them better. Tie the experience back to their learning for the year! This is a great way to introduce Growth Mindset too!

My Mouth is a Volcano: This is another great book to use when establishing procedures at the beginning of the year. (Which is the most important thing you will do ALL year!) A great way to do this is to create anchor charts of your classroom expectations for what each area should "Look Like" and "Sound Like". I love using this book when we are working on our Carpet Time expectations. What will your carpet time LOOK like? What will it SOUND like? This book is perfect for talking about BLURTS in a fun way! Then we create mini volcanos using baking soda cups. Don't forget to tie it back into your Scientific Method!

The Dot: My kiddos LOVED this one last year! It's a cross modification between the Warm Fuzzies and A House for Henry! We called it Adopt a Dot! There are so many fun activities to go with this Peter Reynolds book, but this one was my favorite last year too! The only prep for this activity is creating the Dots themselves. I highly recommend you yourself do this, or enlist the help of a parent volunteer. I burned myself a few times with the hot glue gun! LOL! The day before we began the project I walked students through it. Then I invited them to bring in whatever supplies they could find at home that could be up-cycled to create their Dot home! They were very creative, shared materials and advice, and had a blast! There were lots of modifications being made across the classroom which tied in perfectly with our Scientific Method and Growth Mindset!
I can't believe it's been so long since I've been on here. I've been very busy just enjoying my babies this summer! They are at such fun ages, and we've taken full advantage of every day this summer! I can't say that I've completely turned my school brain off but for the most part I'd say it's preoccupied. It's time to start thinking school though as I have lots of changes coming this year! It's my 10th year teaching, but my first year with a student teacher AND most exciting...I'm getting eMINTS training!!! Please leave great sites, activities etc in the comments. Especially if you have Back To School ideas

I'm excited about this project and hope it turns out as cute as I'm hoping it will. So I saw this idea last week on the Make It Monday page, but can't remember who posted it so I apologize. I made a birthday chair from an old folding metal chair.

This has been another amazing week of summer vacation! We've played pirates, had play dates, gone swimming and just enjoyed each other. This weekend our neighbors are moved. :( My daughter is heart broken. We are tried to ease the transition by trying to talk to her about it a lot, because she's not quite three yet and doesn't understand. So... we threw a "Pupcake Party"!

We had pirate costumes, mustaches and of course cupcakes! (Which my daughter calls pup cakes)

I order my pictures from shutterfly.com I super love the website. If you haven't checked it out you are really missing out. I order books for my kids all the time. Anyway, when you order regular pictures they come with these tiny prints of all the pictures you order. I love this idea and plan to jazz up the sticks (toothpicks) for my daughter's birthday party. I think with some ribbon and card stock I can make them totally cute! I'll post pictures after her party (in a couple of months) to let you know how they turned out!

This week I also tried another clipboard. I just can't seem to get them right. It's super cute don't get me wrong, but the edges are sloppy. Ugh! Anyway, for this one I decided to use pictures of my family and wrapping paper. I loved both of these. It would just help if I could actually have the time to go slow instead of rush during nap time. LOL! However, I really liked the way the wrapping paper worked. It's pretty good paper to begin with (day after Christmas sale at Hobby Lobby)! I'll do that again!! I told my sister I'd make her a picture one as well but I need advice. How do you do the sides of the clip board? Do I just avoid them? Wrap the paper around them? What's the best technique?

My final made it this week was a potato hash with sausage. We live near Silver Dollar City in Branson, MO. Our favorite food to get is potato hash. They use a cast iron skillet, and I know mine could have been better if I'd had one, but all in all it was pretty darn good. I just used two large sweet potatoes, one large Russet potato, four red potatoes, one onion and one red pepper. I just added a TON of butter, some salt and some pepper. It wasn't as AMAZING as Silver Dollar Cities, but I think the next time I make it I will do even better!

We did a little of everything! We played hard, but I seem to be the only one really feeling it. LOL! My kids have some friends over right now so that means I have about five minutes to myself to show you my Made Its! Ha! I am having a hard time getting much done, but I just keep telling myself that my babies will only be babies for a little while, so I just need to enjoy them while they are little. This week I only have home made its, no school related ones yet, but I have some in the back of my mind in case I ever have time to work on them. :)

Okay here goes my first link up with Fourth Grade Frolics

Number 1: Cleaning up our backyard!

So we've been working this past week on our backyard. We are having to mow constantly, and moving all the toys around is a pain! So... a little rock and VOILA!

We now have two designated areas for toys! It makes it so much easier to mow, and it was super cheap. Just some rocks we got from my father in law and some cheap filler rock. We had to invest in some water shoes so the kids could walk on the rocks but I actually really like it! When our kids are grown we are going to make it into a relaxing area with a fire pit. LOVE IT!!

Next..

I can really count it as a "Made It", but I redid a small outdoor table for my kids. We bought this table last year at a garage sale, and the top was pretty beaten up. So... a little chalk board spray paint and TA-DAH!

I love it! I do suggest to make sure it is a smooth surface though because this side is pretty hard to erase, so I might be redoing the back side. I must admit that I might have found a new addiction by using the chalkboard paint. I loved it!
This summer is off to an amazing start! So far we've been to the Zoo, multiple times, the park for picnics, redid our backyard, played with family and went to Silver Dollar City twice! We've also been trying lots of Pinterest ideas. Needless to say, we've been busy, and I am loving every minute of it. I am loving staying up late, sleeping in late (as late as children three and under sleep), and spending every day just playing. It's amazing how much I'm learning about my children since I get to spend all day with them. I am even more in love with them! My daughter, Rylee, is almost three. She has the most amazing personality. She's so creative and witty, although I'm really getting tired of hearing, "You don't say me what to do!" It's good that she's super cute, or she'd be in big trouble. LOL! My son, Kannon, is amazing me too. He just turned one. He's all boy! I have to admit that I am totally jealous of my babysitter! She gets to see my kids so much more than me during the school year, and I feel very blessed to have this summer with them. I plan to make every second count!

I'm planning on linking up with Make it Monday over at Fourth Grade Frolics. I just haven't been as motivated as some others out there! I have some home made-its I can post, but I need to take pictures tomorrow. My main goal for the summer is to learn how to customize my blog! It's our district's goal for all teachers to have updated websites next year, so I'm hoping to have a head start! I also want to make journals for all my subjects next year to use a templates. I also attended a Linda Dorn workshop the other day, and have lots of new things to try to implement from that. I just can't seem to wrap my brain around it all. I keep telling my sister (who is also a fourth grade teacher) that you don't have to do any school work in June! That is what July is for. LOL! I just can't seem to follow that advice myself.
So...if any of you have advice for Math Journals, Writer's Workshop, Reader's Workshop, or Science Journals, I'd love some advice! After attending the Linda Dorn workshop, I know that I want to do a lot more focusing on vocabulary and word work this year. So any ideas would be greatly appreciated!emalielindseyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14197911836493884977noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8310424297360945199.post-41714725034872490292013-04-08T18:38:00.000-07:002013-04-08T18:38:37.791-07:00Back Again...It's been a while since I posted on here, and I debated whether I was going to keep up with this site. However, motivation comes in all forms, and my motivation comes from my co-worker Cheryl Dick over at Cheryl's Classroom Tips. She amazes me and I aspire to be the kind of teacher she is, so here we are. I definitely plan to be a part of the "Monday Make It" this summer, but until then I'm going to be working on re-doing this blog to get ready for next fall. I'm still a "blogger in the making" so any tips that you have are greatly appreciated!emalielindseyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14197911836493884977noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8310424297360945199.post-18543860657470881672012-07-29T19:36:00.000-07:002012-07-29T19:36:35.790-07:00Monday Made It!!!

Projects, Projects and More Projects!

Linking up for my Monday Made It!!!!

This weekend my husband and my oldest daughter were out of town so I took full advantage and tried to knock out lots of projects. In the grand scheme of things I feel like I have a very long way to go but ultimately I am proud of what I accomplished. So here we go....

Project #1 Back to School Resources

I added a page to my blog that shows a few back to school books and activities I use. My hope is that as you check out the site you add a comment of a book/activity that you use for back to school or team building!

Project #2 Finished Clipboards

I finally finished my clipboards, okay actually one of them is a brand new one I just made this weekend. I followed my own advice from my earlier blog and it turned out much better this time! I even added glitter to my Mod Podge and I super love it! Especially out in the sunlight!

Speaking of putting them in the sunlight...I had these drying on my back upper deck and accidentally locked myself out of my house when I went to get them. :( Let me explain how truly terrifying this was to me. As I said, my husband was out of town and I didn't have my phone on me. I am now locked 10 feet (or more) up in the air with no one around and no phone. My precious little three month old was asleep just inside! I started freaking out almost immediately as my mind began running through options.

Option #1 - Drop off of the deck (this could quite possibly break my legs)

Option # 2 - Break the double paned glass (I'm probably not strong enough to do this and a broken arm will make it very hard to lower myself to drop off of the deck)

Option # 3 - Scream for help! (We have only lived here a week, I don't know anyone and I never see anyone out during the day)

Option # 4 - Break the whole dang door!

I chose...

Option 4!!!!!!!!!!! Yep I broke the whole door and then I sat with my baby and cried like a MANIAC!

So at any rate, these clipboards will hold a very special memory/lesson! I will forever leave the deck door (newly fixed) open, and will take my phone out with me every time!

Project # 3 Sweet Rewards Classroom Management System

I got this idea from Tara over at Fourth Grade Frolics She's not sure where she got the idea so I'm just giving her the credit. LOL! Anyway I loved this idea. I made the cupcakes but haven't bought the pan yet to display them. Here's how it works...students will receive a magnetic cupcake on the pan when they receive a compliment as an entire group. When the baking pan is filled they will get a "sweet" reward. Since my district isn't big on actual sweets, the reward will be "sweet" in the sense of being TOTALLY AWESOME! I love using positive reinforcement in my class and I hope this inspires my kids to be on their best behavior!

Project # 4 Welcome Kit

I got this idea from Heidi over at Living.Dreaming.Teaching! I love the idea of having a welcome kit on their desks when they come in. I found some super cute items to put in it at Walmart in the dollar bin so that makes it even better!!!

Sorry it's not the best picture! Anyway you can buy these at Heidi's teachers pay teachers account if you don't want to make your own! Now I just need to put them all together!

Final Project - Bow Holders

So I kind of have a bow infatuation! My daughter has a million bows and they were all just stuffed in a drawer. I found these adorable letters at Hobby Lobby, glued some ribbon to them and voila!!!!

It looks way cuter in person!

So those are my projects not including all the half finished ones! :) All in all I'd say it was a good weekend! (other than the whole deck experience!) I can't wait to hear your comments and don't forget to check out the Back to School Resources to leave your back to school ideas! I'd love some new things to try!!

emalielindseyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14197911836493884977noreply@blogger.com7tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8310424297360945199.post-59361805307718854952012-07-25T19:42:00.000-07:002019-06-05T00:10:58.102-07:00Okay...the diapers are changed, the dishes are done now it's on to my wish list. Ha!! Where to begin?! First of all I guess I should say I WISH my WISH list was much shorter since we are just a week and half away from August! I was just reading over on Heather's blog at Heather's Hearts and started thinking about all the things I want to accomplish and why I do what I do. She's exactly right! We do all these things to make our classrooms look amazing because it's who we are! Do I expect any compliments on it from my students? Nope! Do I hope my co-workers compliment me? You bet!! LOL! At any rate...I am so grateful to all the bloggers out there that not only are you willing to put the time and effort into making your classrooms amazing, but that you are willing to share it with the rest of us.
Okay, now that I've got that out of my system I want to share a couple of projects I made and give some tips that I learned along the way. First of all let me just tell you that I am the most anti-crafiest person you'll ever meet. I have all these dreams and images in my head of what my project will turn out to be and it NEVER turns out. I like to take short cuts for one thing and I don't have much patience or time (with my two sweet babies always at my feet)! So...anyway here they are...

Ta-Dah! My clipboard!!! (minus the ribbon at the top)

Okay so these have been floating all around the world of blogs so I have no actual idea where the idea originated. I do know that I've seen teachers in my very own building toting these things around and always wanted one. HOWEVER...Some words of advice. One cut your paper shorter than the board so that there are pieces of the board left around all edges. I wrapped my paper around the whole darn thing and I'm fairly curtain that my paper will not last long due to this. My advice would be to paint your clipboard (at least the edges) so that when you put your paper down the paint just shows around the edges and this will make the top metal part much easier to deal with! It will also help with not having to try to line up the paper the way I did since I wrapped it from front to back :( Oh well! I am at least proud that I learned how to do this in first place!

Glitter Clothespins!!!

I'm starting in a new district and trying to win the hearts of the building engineers ;)! JK!! Anyway, the theme for my room this year is black and white with pops of bright teals, greens and pinks! So far all I've done are silver and black clothespins. However, I do have some words of advice for these as well. Number 1- Get the finest glitter you can find. My silver are far prettier than my chunky black just due to the fact that the glitter is finer. It also seems to dry better. I simply painted the front with mod podge and dip it into glitter. Voila! My other piece of advice for these is...I sprayed mine with an acrylic type spray. Great idea! But I bought flat and it made my clothespins FAR less shiny :(! BOOO!! At any rate I am not sure where I saw this either, but it is not my idea either. I do a lot of what I call "Brain Borrowing" :) While I am curtain most of you have already created your own clothespins and clipboards I thought I'd share my experience! Tee-hee! Now I'm off to do laundry and snuggle my 12 week old baby boy! :)

Alright, since I am new at this I am going to try to link up for my first Made It Monday (even though today is Tuesday) with the 4th Grade Frolics page. I have been following this blog this summer and have fallen in love with it. So for my first Made it Monday activity I have made this blog! The more I play with it the more I love it. So now...my fellow bloggers I have a few questions??? I have several projects I have been working on but don't have a color printer in order to finish them. I am wondering what is the best solution to this problem? 1. Go out and buy a decent color printer? 2. Send them off to a site that prints them for me? If you suggest choice number 2...please specify a site you'd recommend and why. Thanks in advance for all your advice!
